The Undercover Divas took another road trip to northern Michigan, up Highway 33. As we have done on a previous trip, we stopped at one of our favorite lunch spots, located right on M-33. If you enjoyed eating in your granny’s kitchen, you will like the Rose City Cafe. They take no shortcuts in preparing your meals, with the added bonus of homemade pies and goodies available for dessert.
Rose City began in 1875, when Allen S. Rose moved from New York to Rose City and built a general store. The town was originally named Churchill, until 1892, when the railroad came through and it was renamed Rose City. It was incorporated into a city in 1905. This city has survived over the years as a result of tourism and its location to so many lakes and streams in the scenic surrounding area, including Houghton Creek, which runs through town.
Located here in Rose City, the Rose City Cafe, is one of the best small town country diners we have every visited. It is a “mom and pop” diner that serves an impressive breakfast, a sumptuous lunch, and many delicious dinners. They specialize in true American fare, and offer some of the best diner meals in the state of Michigan.
We walked into their entrance, an arctic room, featuring knotted pine walls and pine benches. Proceeding inside, we noticed lots of windows, booths and tables. There is a bakery counter at the register at the entrance, with plenty of homemade pies, brownies, cinnamon rolls, peanut butter cookies, etc., to be purchased on the way out. Everything looked amazing. It’s always nice to be able to take a sweet home for later.
We tried several of their lunch choices on two visits. The grilled chicken Caesars wrap was available with a white, wheat or spinach wrap. It had sliced grilled chicken breast, nestled in a fresh mix of green leaf lettuce, cheese and tightly rolled, with a tangy dressing, and was perfect. Their deliciously drippy French dip sandwich, with it’s fantastically flavored beef, had the most delectably savory liquid to dip it in.
The lightly battered, perfectly fried fish sandwich was almost too large to bite. Their special tangy tartar sauce was the perfect accompaniment. Light, flaky, tender and moist, the cod sandwich was my personal favorite. There were several grilled sandwiches on the menu that looked especially good, as we saw them going by for other customers. They looked really delicious, over the top melty goodness and will be our choice at our next visit. All sandwiches are served with a dill pickle and included their special, home made curly fries, and prices were around $8.49 each.
The breakfast menu looked inviting and there were plenty of daily specials for both lunch and dinner. Everything that we ordered was cooked to perfection. The place was really clean and inviting. It is a great place to visit if you are taking a ride up north in Michigan.
We rated the Rose City Cafe, Four Divas, as our food was tasty and cooked to perfection and our servers were friendly and eager to please. Our service has always been fast, and our coffee cups were often being refilled. The Rose City Cafe is located at 712 Bennett St. in Rose City, Michigan. Prices are reasonable, we will be back.
